Bube’s Brewery, Mount Joy, PA

It’s Pronounced “Boobies”

Or, The Best Haunted Restaurant in Lancaster County (I Think)

One mild Saturday night in December of 2023, I was presented with an opportunity, Traveler.

I had nowhere to be, and I had nothing to do. I stumbled upon a Facebook post from the incredible team at Jott-Nyx Paranormal. Wouldn’t you know it? They had a ghost-hunting event that same night at Bube’s Brewery in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. It had been a while since my last ghost hunt was a mere seance in a cemetery, and I had $40 for a ticket (very affordable!) I decided to roll into Spooky Nook once more.

Mount Joy is nestled between the city of Lancaster and the capital city of Harrisburg. A quaint little town overlooking the Susquehanna River, I’m reminded of that old Lancaster charm I experienced when I was young and during our few family trips to Hersheypark. Hersheypark is a theme built to capitalize off the famous candy made nearby. Funny enough, according to Wikipedia, Milton Hershey built the park for his employees and their families.

Milton Hershey may also haunt Hersheypark, but that’s another hunt for another day.

Returning to Mount Joy and its quaintness, our destination tonight is Bube’s Brewery.

The hotel side of the building

To answer your question, Traveler, it’s pronounced boobies.

I’m going to summarize the history of the brewer from the restaurant’s own website.

Alois Bube was a German immigrant who decided to brew some of that lager that the Germans and Pennsylvania had become known for. Pennsylvania has long held strong Germanic roots, going all the way back to the 17th and 18th centuries with William Penn’s founding of the state.

Funny enough, dowsing rods have Germanic roots as well.

Over time, the brewery took off and served for other purposes, including a hotel and a gentleman’s club. It may or may not have served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, though that has yet to be confirmed.

The Bube family eventually died out, and the building was left abandoned. In 1968, restoration began on the building that now sits as a tavern, restaurant, hotel, and, all in all, an excellent venue for a Saturday night, be it for meeting up with old friends, having a private function with family, or, of course, chasing spirits.

I left early and made my way through Lancaster County to Mount Joy. On arrival, I planned to try food at Bube’s and kill some time before the hunt. I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered my usual Diet Coke, and my entree’ was an Outlaw Burger with a side of fries.

While I waited for my meal, I took note of the bustle at Bube’s Brewery on a Saturday night. Like J. Timothy’s, it was busy but not uncomfortable, and everyone was everyone else’s friend. The waitstaff were terrific. Some restaurant employees seemed to be there on their day off, just hanging out.

The Outlaw, with fries

My Outlaw Burger, topped with BBQ sauce, jalapeno, and onion rings, did not disappoint!

The burger is robust but also hearty. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. The fires were tasty and well-seasoned. I absolutely recommend Bube’s Brewery, even without the ghost hunt!

But what about that ghost hunt?

The Jott-Nyx team

Jott-Nyx runs an incredible hunt. In addition to being so affordable for a paranormal event, the team is amicable and are seasoned investigators. They work with their guests and even allow their guests to review evidence with them!

Michelle, a co-founder of Jott-Nyx, leaves her email open (check page) for you to submit your evidence, suggestions, or general pleasantries. Furthermore, that night, I learned something! I’ve done this over 24 years now, Traveler, and I only knew how runes work this past month.

Our seance by candlelight (that’s a person there, sorry)

The Jott-Nyx Paranormal Investigation at Bube’s Brewery is a fun, affordable event for all ages that I recommend anyone take. I might even be back myself soon! Don’t miss it! Times and ticket information can be found on the Jott-Nyx Facebook and Bube’s Brewery website.

Oh, and I never answered if Bube’s was haunted or not!

It absolutely is! And I’ll post some damn convincing evidence in the corroborating video on my YouTube channel, hopefully by New Year’s Eve!

But until then,

Safe Travels!
